EdCC FAA Curriculum Development

Composite Materials Repair

The development of a new course on composite materials repair and maintenance is being conducted under a grant to Edmonds Community College, sponsored and funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and with considerable support from local industry. The increase in composite materials in commercial aircraft has resulted in a high priority for standardized training in composite materials maintenance and repair by the FAA and major aircraft manufacturers of commercial aircraft. The MPDC is working closely with the FAA and is directing this effort.   Last December, the MPDC successfully conducted a workshop involving experts from around the world in order to establish a framework for this new course as an initial step.  Curriculum development materials, such as course objectives, will be available for other colleges and organizations, after final course review by the FAA in September of 2005.  Everett Community College is adopting elements of the course into their existing aviation mechanic training.
The course will be for 3-hour credits, and shall include ‘hands-on' laboratory learning.
The FAA may utilize this course as an industry standard for educating engineers, technicians and inspectors in composite materials repair. Course objectives will be widely available for customized delivery by other organizations. Course development shall also have application in other industries, such as the marine industry.
